Note from Global Scholar 2014-2015, Ms. Lexi Vankevich:
Being a Rotary Global Grant Scholar this year in London has been an absolute privilege. Class has been intellectually stimulating, but more important is the opportunity for cultural enlightenment and relationship development amongst Rotarians both in London and throughout Europe.
I am exceptionally thankful to my sponsor club in Langley, Canada for their generosity and belief me, enough to afford me the opportunity to study here. This is one element of the new Global Grant scheme I think is particularly beneficial: the way in which clubs are granted the autonomy to use District and Foundation funds to support people and causes they believe in. As the Grant pertains to graduate studies, clubs are better able to identify and invest in talent of youth in their own community and sponsor them on their own accord. I am grateful for such clubs that do no neglect the important good of facilitating such efforts and investing in my generation—the future of Rotary.
Lastly, to potential Global Scholars, do not be afraid to approach clubs and develop relationships with them so as to share more with them about your vision and interest graduate school. Clubs are most welcoming to such initiative, as they likely do not have time to go looking for scholars or causes themselves.
On the whole, I could not be more pleased with how well-treated I was this year by my host club, the Rotary Club of Paddington, nor could I be more thankful for the generous of heart worldwide that make Rotary a success everywhere and that have made this incredible opportunity possible for me. In the future, I yearn to do my best in the days and years ahead and hope to prove a worthy investment.
